My boss came back to work from his holiday (Yon Kipper) and handed me this poem. As I finish reading it ... I can't help but wonder what will my "dash" tell of me? Lately, I been so busy with work (we are short-handed and I am trying to adjust to my new position as Pharmacy Manager) -- that I sometimes find it even hard to breathe. However, after reading the poem, it felt great leaving work tonight and for the 1st time (for a long time) to enjoy the autumn air and notice the beautiful changing leaves on the tree. It is easy to say "Life is too short" but harder to stop and actually notice the morning mist on a flower. Perhaps, from now on, every morning I will take a couple more seconds to appreciate the autumn air before hopping too quickly to my car to go to work.
I read of a man who stood to speak at the funeral of a friend
He referred to the dates on her tombstone,
From beginning ... to the end.
He noted that first came her date of birth,
And spoke the following date with tears,
But he said what mattered most of all,
Was the dash between those years.
For the dash represents all of time
That she spent alive on Earth...
And now only those who loved her,
Knew what that little dash was worth.
For it matter not, how much we own:
The cars ... The house ... The cash,
What matter is how we live and love
And how we spend our dash.
So please think about this long and hard ...
Are there things you'd like to change?
For you never know what much time is left,
That can still be rearranged.
If we could just slow down enough,
To consider what's true and real,
And always try and understand how other people feel.
And be less quick to anger,
And show our appreciation more,
And love the people in our lives,
Like we've never loved before.
If we treat each other with respect
And more often wear a smile.
Remembering that this special dash
Might only last awhile.
So, when your eulogy's being read
With your life's action to rehash...
Would you be proud of the things they say,
About how you spent your dash?
